For programming, word processing, and other productive work, consider getting an 8K TV instead of a multi-monitor setup. An 8K TV will have superior image quality, resolution, and versatility compared to multiple 4K displays, at roughly the same size. As a bonus, an 8K display is also suitable for gaming at 4K 120 Hz, or for full screen media consumption, which is not possible with multiple smaller monitors.

lethain.com
Migrations are both essential and frustratingly frequent as your codebase ages and your business grows: most tools and processes only support about one order magnitude of growth before becoming ineffective, so rapid growth makes them a way of life. This post takes a look at why migrations are so important, and also how to run them effectively.

Feature flags, sometimes called feature toggles or feature switches, are a software development technique that allows engineering teams to decouple the release of new functionality from software deployments. With feature flags, developers can turn specific features or code segments on or off at runtime, without the need for a code deployment or rollback. Organizations who adopt feature flags see improvements in all key operational metrics for DevOps: Lead time to changes, mean-time-to-recovery, deployment frequency, and change failure rate.

Here are some notes on how to layout a Django project. It breaks away from structuring a project around Django “apps” and instead uses a clear separation between three core layers; data, domain, and interfaces. Let’s use the following example, an e-commerce site called “Crema” where people can purchase coffee goods. Below is a layout of the fundamental directories.

Have you ever heard of SEMA? It's a fairly esoteric system for measuring how good a software team is. No, wait! Don't follow that link! It will take you about six years just to understand that stuff. So I've come up with my own, highly irresponsible, sloppy test to rate the quality of a software

Consider Linux and Mac OS X as brother and sister. They come from the same father and mother (Unix, FTW!), they share many genetic traits (Terminal, AMP (LAMP/MAMP), X11 FTW!) and have similar friends (there's a fairly large open-source community geared towards the Mac). The differences are mostly minor, Mac (the sister) is a bit prettier and the dad is a bit more protective of her, so you lose a bit of freedom but it's not necessarily a negative as much as a different philosophy. Linux is a do whatever you want, however you want system, Mac is a do whatever you want, however you want as long as you don't touch ____ (usually core system files). It's meant to protect the sanctity of the system against common/nefarious users, not to prevent you from doing what you want. Linux OTH isn't as pretty and the dad encourages him to mess around more, which leads to more freedom but also to a tougher experience overall. He won't get free coffee at the coffee shop because he's pretty, but he'll get the job done dammit. You were friends with the brother and now you're considering dating his sister. Sure, there might be some conflicts, but you also get the benefit of knowing her family background, having a friend who is intimately aware of the some of the crazy shit the sister does, and at the end of the day, unlike in real life, if shit don't work out you can ditch the girl and go back into the freedom loving arms of the brother, you sick perverted bastard.

I’ve been doing this “reliability” stuff for a little while now (~5 years), at companies ranging from about 20 developers to over 2,000. I’ve always cared primarily about the software elements I describe as living “outside” the application – like, how does it get its configuration? What kinds of instances does it run on, and are those the best kinds to use? What steps does it take on its path from “code in a repository” to “running in production”? And I’ve always kept track of what I liked – which mechanisms allowed fast iteration and which caused frustration, which led to outages and which prevented them.

Motivation is an essential part of being fast — but in this essay, we’re going to focus on the process and concrete steps to implement it.

While I was leading PKC’s security practice, we did probably 20-30 code security audits, almost of all of them for startups that were just around their Series A or B (that was usually when they had cash and realized that it’d be good to take a deeper look at their security, after the do-or-die focus on product market fit).

You’re in love. The two of you want to share the rest of your lives. So, being good game theorists, you have a romantic dinner and plan how to align your interests for mutually beneficial optimal strategic behavior. Your goals are (1) to Odysseus yourself so that even if you’re momentarily tempted to break up you can’t, and (2) to remove the power of breaking up as a negotiation tactic so that you both invest fully in the relationship. So you come up with a plan: You’ll make costly commitments by purchasing jewelry, and you’ll sign a contract with the government that intermingles assets and is difficult to unwind. Maybe you’ll even join a religion that says that breaking up is punished in the afterlife. That’s helpful, but you go further. You decide to throw a giant expensive party where you both invite everyone you know and make loud public vows to each other. You consider telling everyone “OK, here are some promises that we’ve designed to maximize how embarrassing it would be for us to break up”, but decide it’s better not to make that explicit. You wear jewelry at all times to indicate you’re taken, and you get everyone to agree to lose respect for you if you don’t stay together. Critically, you get everyone to agree that it’s gauche to discuss the strategic logic of all this. It works. The two of you are so legendarily happy that everyone starts to copy your techniques. Generations later, everyone is still doing this stuff without thinking about it, which makes it work even better.

Who could blame young adults for thinking that work is fake and meaningless if we prescribe fake and meaningless work for the first two decades of their existence? By confining meaningful work to an adult-only activity, it is little wonder that adolescence is a period of great depression. It would be surprising if it was not. Even for smart children, education endlessly ushers them towards an often far and always abstract future, so far and abstract that some children seem to apprise the opposite of agency, they take on a learned helplessness, and downplay that the future is a reality at all.
